Free and paid tickets, together at last
improvement
Until now, an Event on the platform had to be either free or paid — a single toggle at the top of the event editor decided which one. Free events got a single “General Admission” ticket type behind the scenes; paid events got a list of ticket types you could configure with prices and limits. The two shapes never crossed, which meant if you wanted a free entry AND a paid Supporter tier at the same Event, you couldn’t.
That split is gone. From now on, every Event has a single “Ticket types” section where you add one or more types, each with its own price. Set the price to 0 for a free ticket, or something above 0 for a paid one. You can mix and match freely inside the same Event.
Your existing Events keep working exactly as they were. Anything you set up before this change is preserved as-is — no action needed on your part. If you open one for editing you’ll notice the old “Event Type” radio is gone and everything now shows up in the unified editor, but the data underneath is unchanged.
Two other small things worth flagging that came with this: free ticket types can now have a Total Available cap (the field was previously only exposed for paid types, so free Events had no way to limit registrations without workarounds); and behind the scenes, when a Participant picks a mix of free and paid tickets in the same purchase, everything is processed through the same checkout — the free tickets are only created after the paid part is confirmed, so no half-purchases.
Speaking of caps, this feeds into a smaller improvement you’ll start seeing on the platform: “Sold out” badges now appear on event cards, the public event page, and the organizer dashboard whenever an Event hits its capacity. That signal now works consistently for free and paid Events alike.
