About this session
Slapchop: Paint Your First Miniature
Have you seen beautifully painted miniatures and figured you’d never manage one yourself? This session is for you. Slapchop is a painting method built for beginners. It gets you a good-looking, tabletop-ready miniature without years of practice or a steady surgeon’s hand.
How it works
Slapchop gets the paint to do the hard work. We start by priming the miniature dark and then brushing on light highlights, which builds light and shadow into the model before any colour goes on. Then we add colour with translucent paints that let that shading show through. Even simple, loose brushwork ends up with depth and contrast that would normally take much more skill.
What we’ll do together
We’ll go through the whole process from start to finish, one step at a time:
Prep and prime: getting your miniature ready for paint Build the light: using a dry brush to bring out the raised details Add colour: blocking in your colours with translucent paints Finishing touches: picking out a few details to make your miniature stand out
You’ll paint along with me at each stage, and I’ll be moving around the table to help, answer questions and share tips.
What you should know
No experience needed. If you’ve never held a paintbrush, you’re in exactly the right place. Experienced painters who want to try a faster method are welcome too. Everything is provided. You’ll get a miniature, paints, brushes and everything else you need. Just bring yourself. Your miniature is yours to keep. Take it home, put it on your shelf, or bring it to your next game. Dress for mess. We use acrylic paints, which wash out of skin easily but can stain clothing. Wear something you don’t mind getting a little paint on.
