Running a TTRPG session can be extremely rewarding, but feeling underprepared or inexperienced often stops people from doing it more often. Our goal with this workshop is to break down those barriers and help GMs feel comfortable and confident to run their next one-shot and hopefully running a table at BIRCON!

What to expect?

A diverse team of experienced GMs representing different styles of play and approaches to Game Mastering will run short scenarios, propose exercises and offer a peek behind the screens showing how they approach their craft.

There’ll be no long talks or “lectures” on how to GM (whatever that means!). The moderators will share experiences, tools and tips that worked for them, while allowing the opportunity to learn from each other while putting things into practice.

Who is it for?

New and aspiring game masters, or seasoned ones who want to sharpen their skills and get insights from other experienced GMs.

Meet the team

Rebecca Allen leads high-energy, highly improvised games. She has been running public games in Berlin for the past few years and writes one-page games under the name Vivienne Wolf.

Maria Karnaukhova is a designer and facilitator by day, and she started GMing a few years ago. She’ll share what she’s learned between her first failed campaign and today - running public games, building her own community, and taking first steps as a pro GM.

Kara Payne has 15 years of experience playing and running tabletop RPGs. She loves high-roleplay, rules-light games focused on collaborative storytelling, “playing to lift,” and giving every character a moment in the spotlight.

Jacob Lefton is an actor, improviser and writer who has been playing and running roleplaying games since he was a child. He has won awards for an actual play podcast.

Jason Durall is a professional game designer, working with Chaosium, Cubicle 7, Modiphius, Free League, Black Monk, and more, and has run hundreds of game sessions at conventions world-wide.

Gabe Aleixo started GMing as a teenager and has extensive professional experience facilitating workshops and other group activities that involve words such as “breakout sessions”, “brainstorming” and the like.
